WHO Thailand joined the Department of Disease Control, Ministry of Public Health, in commemorating World Drowning Prevention Day on 30 July 2025. The event was officially inaugurated by Mr Kittikorn Lohsoonthorn, Secretary to the Minister of Public Health, Thailand.

The event focused on raising awareness about drowning prevention and underscored the importance of collective efforts and community engagement to reduce deaths due to drowning. Thailand aims to reduce drowning deaths to less than 290 annually among children under 15, and less than 1,940 across all age groups by 2037. Concerns were also raised about the rising drowning rates among the elderly, and the country is actively working with partners to develop targeted interventions to address this.

A key highlight of the event was the sharing of best practices from MERIT MAKER community teams, as well as a compelling panel discussion on “Leaving no one behind: Equality to prevent drowning”, which focused on the specific needs of children with mental and physical disabilities.
