Guideline Development Group on consumption of tropical oils
The WHO Department of Nutrition and Food Safety coordinates the work to develop a series of guidelines on healthy diets to provide evidence-informed nutrition guidance.

Background

Healthy diets help to prevent malnutrition in all its forms as well as a range of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and conditions. The WHO Department of Nutrition and Food Safety coordinates the work to develop a series of guidelines on healthy diets to provide evidence-informed nutrition guidance. Building on the guidelines on saturated fatty acid and trans-fatty acid intake and total fat intake, WHO is planning to develop a guideline on consumption of tropical oils such as palm oil and coconut oil. It is important to review existing evidence on the health effects of tropical oil consumption in a systematic manner and issue WHO guidance through the current WHO guideline development process. The guideline will respond to the need for guidance particularly in the context of identifying healthy alternatives to industrially produced trans fat.

To provide evidence-informed guidance on this topic, WHO has brought together experts from all over the globe, with a wide range of relevant expertise.
